A speed camera in Linslade, Bedfordshire has had it's filming device stolen and was then set on fire.
The police are not saying whether they think it may have been someone caught speeding who tried to destroy the evidence, but that would seem likely, and indeed has happened on occasions in the past.
If it was a digital camera, the evidence would already have been received automatically back at the control room.
A spokesperson of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Cameras, Tickets & Collisions team, commented: "Not only was this a needless act of vandalism, there was also a theft of the camera itself, which costs thousands of pounds."
Police are appealing for witnesses and information.
