Scottish motorists may soon be offered a speed awareness course instead of a fine - the same system that operates across the rest of the UK.

If drivers are caught just over the speed limit they will be offered a half-day course at a fee similar to the £100 speeding fine and avoid getting penalty points on their licence.

Andy Edmonston, the head of road policing commented: "This is a move to look at the viability of courses. It is the right sort of approach. There is a lot of criticism of the inequality of the system compared with south of the Border."

He added: "We want to build a culture where we are prosecuting the right people rather than normally law-abiding members of the public who have had a momentary lapse of attention. They made a mistake and it is not necessary to criminalise them."

Neil Greig, of the Institute of Advanced Motorists RoadSmart, said: "There is widespread support for the concept."

The only problem is that if you live in England, you won't have the choice. Embarassed
