Scotland is getting its first urban average speed cameras starting tomorrow, Monday 4th September.

The system has been in place in Old Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh for testing since May.

It's been reported that in the period 2013 to 2015 there have been six collisions where someone was injured along the stretch including two resulting in serious injury and one fatality.

Police Scotland say that the average speed cameras introduced on the A77 and the A9 roads have provided significant road safety improvements and they expect the new ones to do the same.

A spokesman commented: "Having identified a high casualty rate on Old Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh and having ruled out other potential remedial measures, we considered all the tactical options available to combat the excessive speed on the road.

He added: "Following on from the installation and a period of testing, the system will go live and we are confident it will have a noticeable effect on driver behaviour and the speeds of vehicles on this stretch of road with a resultant reduction in casualties."
