SatNav Led To DrinkDriver Ban
Article by: rob brady Date: 14 Sep 2014
SatNav instructions from his passenger's phone led 21 year old Adam McDonald the wrong way down a South Shields one-way street and straight into the arms of the law... and it soon became apparent that this was not McDonald's only problem.
His car passed a police vehicle, which consequently did a u-turn and flagged McDonald to stop, but when the police officers spoke to him, they could smell alcohol on his breath so made him take a breath test.
The test recorded 79 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, which is more than double the legal limit.
Defending McDonald at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, Laura Johnson said: "He had been on a night out and was picking up a friend in South Shields. He had another friend in the passenger seat who was using his phone as a SatNav to direct him. As a result of following it he ended up going the wrong way, against the flow of traffic."
Sunderland man McDonald was banned from driving for 20 months, ordered to pay a fine of £430, court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £43.
