PowerWatch 2 A GPS Watch Powered By Your Body Heat
Article by: Darren Griffin Date: 8 Nov 2019
The first time I read the press release for this watch I automatically assumed it was some sort of scam, how could body heat be sufficient to power a GPS equipped smartwatch?
But it is real and it really is powered by body heat. The PowerWatch 2 is yet another fitness tracking smartwatch with the usual raft of features. But the power system is unique and the makers claim it can generate enough power from your body heat to power the GPS for 30 minutes per day.
It has no battery at all, just a supercapacitor, a power store that can accept and deliver charge much faster than batteries, and tolerates many more charge and discharge cycles than rechargeable batteries. The thermoelectric generator converts body heat into power and the greater the difference between your body heat and ambient temperature the more power it can generate.
It's an interesting system but has some shortcomings and the watch itself is huge, but not having to charge it is a game changer. But at $500 for the base model you'll need deep pockets and a very strong desire to be charger free to justify purchasing one.
