A speed camera has been shot at by a rifle in Wainuiomata, near Wellington, New Zealand on Christmas Eve.
Shots had been fired at the speed camera in the past and it has also been attacked with an angle grinder. Those incidents prompted police to install CCTV cameras at the site, so it is possible that the perpetrator could be identified.
National Manager of Road Policing, Superintendent Steve Greally said: "The potential for ricochet or misfire or whatever, people not even hitting their target with the firearm, so the projectile could go a lot further, and someone could be injured that way."
He added: "It's really disturbing and unnecessary behaviour and bloody appalling, quite frankly."
