A brand new fleet of speed camera vans were introduced across Lancashire yesterday. Eight high visibility vehicles will monitor speeding, seat belt offences and mobile phone use.

The operators are being issued with radios and body cams in an attempt to keep them safer. There are also CCTV monitors in the vans. This is due to a increase in abusive behaviour at the hands of some disgruntled motorists.

Police Superintendent Julian Platt commented: "These vans have been liveried to provide a highly visible presence. We want drivers to see them and know we are there."

He added: "The technicians perform an important role of deterring driving which puts road users at risk and steps will be taken to investigate and prosecute anyone who is captured displaying abusive behaviour towards the technicians or deliberately obstructing them as this is clearly unacceptable."
