Further mobile speed cameras are on the way for North Yorkshire.

The Executive Board of North Yorkshire Police have given the go head for road safety initiatives which include the purchase of three new mobile speed camera vans.

The vans will begin operation next spring and are in addition to the existing three vehicles.

The intention is to catch up to the resources of other forces and cover more roads that are known for frequent accidents and speeding.

There will also be a community speed watch scheme developed in the area along with enhanced training and education for drivers.

It is reported that 51 people died on York and North Yorkshire roads in 2013 - the highest number since 2008 - up from 35 in 2012.

In contrast, 442 people were seriously injured in 2013, compared with 489 in 2012. Last year had the lowest figures in 20 years.

North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner commented: "The recent survey I undertook showed without question the vast majority of the public are concerned about road safety, and this shows we are taking those concerns seriously."
