Huge Reduction in Serious Crashes in Dumfries and Galloway

It has been reported that speed cameras covering the Dumfries and Galloway area has reduced serious crashes by over 80%.

Two speed camera vans police the district covering 20 different locations.

The figures show that over a three year average, serious accidents declined by 81% since mobile cameras were introduced. Minor accidents also declined by 69% across the region.

The figures form part of a response from Dumfries and Galloway Council to a nationwide consultation by Transport Scotland.

The council raised concerns about the possibility of a "national communications team" for safety camera partnerships, stating that past Scotland-wide campaigns had "often missed southern Scotland".

Not everyone agrees that speed cameras alone are responsible for the reduction of casualties across the country. Dumfries and Galloway's neighbours in the Scottish Borders have had twenty cameras torched in their area over the past 10 years, with a further six attacked with a saw.

Many still believe that they are purely cash machines. This is despite many councils saying they cannot afford to operate them any more.
