Garmin have decided to enter the increasingly popular action camera market, currently dominated by the GoPro, with a duo of rugged cameras, the VIRB and VIRB Elite.

Both cameras offer full 1920x1080 HD Video using a 16MP image sensor and a 1.4" colour LCD for framing and video/photo review. Storage is catered for by the provision of a microSD card slot and various other photo and still shot modes are provided.

The VIRB Elite adds a GPS, Accelerometer and Altimeter as well as 802.11 WiFi and ANT+ support. An app, available for Android and iOS will also be available allowing remote start/stop of recording, camera status etc.

And, as you'd expect, there is a wide range of accessories to accompany the cameras including head, tripod and handlebar mounts and wired remote controls.

The rugged action camera market has proved a very profitable one for GoPro, and, as yet, there has no other manufacturer has been as popular. Garmin's offering looks interesting and, on paper, ticks all the right boxes. We hope to have a review unit next month and will run a side by side comparison against the GoPro.

Do the GoPro have GPS in them? Or is this a USP for the Garmins?

I hope they'll do a smaller, discreet version suited to use as a dash cam
