Dormant speed cameras are one step closer to being switched back on in South Somerset after the Chief Constable, Nick Gargan called on the council to reactivate the cameras.

Discussions are taking place between Somerset County Council and Avon and Somerset Police.

Originally, back in 2010 the police advised that fixed speed cameras were not an effective deterrent against speeding drivers.

They now have new data based on national research and wish to purchase the cameras from the council and take responsibility for the costs. If the deal goes ahead, they will be bought for a nominal fee.

Gargan commented, "We believe that the static cameras can be operated in a cost neutral way and that reactivating them for use alongside our mobile camera vans will help in making our roads safer."

Somerset Police have claimed at least 48 people died on the region’s roads last year. That is two more than in 2012 and 16 more than 2011.
