Thames Valley Police are set to upgrade all the fixed speed cameras in its area.
They will be replacing the old wet film cameras with always-on digital technology. which produce much clearer images.
The cameras will be connected directly to a control centre in Banbury, Oxfordshire. This means that it will now no longer be necessary to change the film, which often leads to large gaps in operation in the current models.
The upgrades will be prioritised according to the number of road casualties and the speed of vehicles at particular sites.
The project starts with its first upgrade on Monday and will be rolled out over the next five years. Twenty cameras have already been earmarked for work over the course of this year and ten for next year.
A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police commented: "This improved technology will help us continue to respond to concerns raised by local communities and help make their roads safer."
He claimed: "They are used solely for road safety reasons as evidence shows they are effective at reducing casualty rates."

Are these also being upgraded in Hampshire, or do Hampshire share a spokesman with Thames Valley, or...?

Agreed Philip, a bit confusing.
Thames Valley Police cover Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire but also work very closely with the Hampshire Constabulary.
