Fines Drop and Speed Cameras Increase

The number of speeding fines have dropped dramatically in Birmingham and West Midlands since 2010.
In fact, the number of fines handed out by the courts over the last four years have dropped by almost two thirds from 4,000 to 1,442 per year.
By some way of explanation, in April 2013, 305 fixed speed and traffic light cameras in the West Midlands were switched off.
The police said they couldn't afford the cost of upgrading them to digital film (once installed, digital film is a cheaper and more efficient way of monitoring speeding motorists). The cameras were left in situ due to the reported £600,000 cost of removing them.
It has now been decided to install new digital equipment in seven of Birmingham's and three of Solihull's fixed cameras at a cost of one million pounds.
Cameras situated in the areas' worst accident black spots will be upgraded. The council's head of transport strategy said: "These sites are where you are going to make the most impact in terms of accident levels."
The money will come jointly from of the City Council, West Midlands Police and the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership. Revenue from resulting fines will be passed to the treasury and West Midlands Police will receive revenue generated from driver awareness courses which are often offered instead of a fine and points.

I drive a great deal for business and inevitably fall prey to speed cameras. Its Never a fixed camera, its Always an Ambush van alongside the road, which of course there is little protection from with regard to speed camera files and I don't have a Road Angel or similar...
Having said this, with the influx of Visitors to this country the tendency to ignore red traffic lights seems to be endemic! Back in November I was almost wiped out by a white flat bed truck which screamed across a junction with his light on red (red for a while as we now had a green!) If I had pulled out on green he would have centre punched me with likely terminal results.
So I would certainly support cameras on traffic lights as they Really Are a safety measure - unlike the revenue earning Ambush vans around our roads... So why are the police and Government not adding traffic light cameras across the country if they are so keen on safety??

Because they only catch people who have jumped the lights. How does that improve safety? They are usually not painted orange, so not as easy to spot as the (usually) multitude of big, obvious, red lights.
Get the PGPSW database. That includes mobile sites.

I drive for nothing but business, for the past 15 years as a whitevanman. I have Never fallen prey to speed cameras. Two reasons - first, I make every effort not to speed - second, I have been using the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database since 2005.
That's all it takes.
And that's all it takes to do away with speed camera income, so they would be operating at a loss. Just imagine the result if suddenly the cameras were all earning zilch? They'd have to put up taxes!
