A man has erected a fake speed camera in the front garden outside his house.
Jim Dyke, 32, erected his device in the village of Clows Top, Worcester using a drain pipe, plywood, yellow paint and a mirrored beer mat - it took him three hours to make and cost him £25.
He says that some vehicles travel 60mph along the 30mph stretch that passes his house and there was a fatality on the road earlier this year.
He commented: "Since the first day we put it up last Saturday we’ve noticed a huge difference. One woman even got out of her car and asked if it was real - as if it was, she would lose her driving licence. We of course told her it wasn't, but we do hope it makes other motorists think about their speed."
The chairman of the local Parish Council said: "They must not be distracting. But otherwise, so long as they are on private land, I understand that they can stay. We’ll have to wait and see"... he admitted that he's unsure of the legality of the camera.
It could be argued that if no proper signage is in place, some drivers who see it at the last minute may suddenly slam on their brakes to avoid "detection". The fake camera may ironically therefore have made the road more prone to accidents.
