A week-long, Europe wide speed enforcement operation commenced yesterday.

Police forces across Europe have started a week-long speed enforcement operation where their officers will use a number of speed detection methods across all types of roads.

According to the organisers, the purpose of the operation is to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, and to remind drivers of the benefits for all road users of driving at speeds that are both legal and appropriate.

The operation is being coordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL).

TISPOL President Paolo Cestra said: "We urge all drivers to challenge their own attitude to speeding. Anyone who still believes that speeding is a trivial offence needs to think again."

He added: "That is because excessive or inappropriate speed has a singularly devastating impact on the safety of road users, increasing both the risk of a crash and the severity of the consequences. It is estimated that speeding contributes to as many as one third of all crashes resulting in death, and is the most important contributory factor to road deaths and serious injuries"

Exceeding the speed limit is a factor in 5% of accidents, but accounts for 15% of fatalities. The major cause of accidents is failing to pay attention/being distracted by some activity in the vehicle. It suggests that the black boxes used by insurance companies to monitor driving would be a better means of prevention if there was mandatory use.

It's precisely why speeding is one of the fatal four in that even though it's only a factor in 5% of accidents it causes 15% of casualties.
