Driver Warned By Police For Satnav Stupidity

Grreater Manchester Police stopped a driver on the M56 and gave him 'words of advice' after they observed him driving with a satnav stuck to the windscreen directly in front of him.
A Police spokesman said: "This vehicle was stopped and the driver given advice regarding the placement of his sat nav. This was clearly obstructing his view and directly in his line of sight, you must have a full clear view of the road and traffic ahead, obstructing this is an offence. There were two child passengers in the car which led us to take immediate action and having been given advice moved the sat nav to a more appropriate place and was issued with a traffic offence report (TOR) before being allowed to continue his journey."
Sadly this isn't as uncommon as you may think, I have personally seen drivers with their satnav in the exact same position a number of times and you have to wonder what the heck they were thinking, or not thinking perhaps.

It has astounded me how many people drive with their satnav or their phone or both in the way in their windscreen. I wish the police would stop them and give offence reports more often. Maybe others would notice and stop it.
I suppose it is just a continuation of the furry dice hanging from the mirror syndrome, just brought up to date - 'driving isn't dangerous enough, lets add a soupcon of real danger by hiding part of the road in front of us'.
Do the MOT testers do like they do for bad number plates? Move it for the test and put it back after?
Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Nexus 5, Galaxy tab S3. Also use OSMAnd+, Sygic Mobile Maps, and OS maps app. Also "Great Britain Topo Maps" and "Old Maps". Don't use speed camera database as sticking to the limit is safer. |

Now I've retired I help out at my sons garage and as a part of that I take cars and vans to MOT test.
On many occasions I take down SATNAV/ phone carriers stuck to the windscreen directly in front of the driver, obstructing their view and I leave them loose on the dashboard top after the test.
If the vehicle owner queries why I've not replaced them I point out I would be liable to commit the offence of aid and abetting a criminal offence when they drove whilst obstructing their view ahead. They ar often supprised it is an offence.
On the comment of dangly dice, the current craze appears to be collecting air fresheners hanging from the rear view mirror (and not even taking the dead one's down).

And even if you mount your phone/sat-nav out of the way, you need to be careful not to put it somewhere that obstructs any air bags, particularly the side air bags in the A pillar. You wouldn't want the air bags to deploy incorrectly or for your phone to be launched at high speed into your face as the air bag deploys, would you?
