Average Speed Cameras To Be Introduced Following 9 Deaths

Following nine fatalities in the last 15 years, it has been decided to install average speed cameras on a dangerous South Wales road.

Six cameras will operate over two 40mph stretches between Gowerton and Penclawdd and Llanmorlais and Llanrhidian. It is anticipated that they will be operational before Christmas.

A spokesman for Swansea Council said, "A number of different traffic calming measures have previously been introduced to encourage motorists to drive responsibly. However motorists are still driving too fast and we need to act to prevent further tragic accidents happening."

Previous calming measures included a speed limit reduction from 50mph to 40mph and the introduction of solid double white lines in the middle of the road to discourage drivers from overtaking on dangerous stretches.

Absolutely no data provided as to whether ANY of those fatalities were caused by excessive speed.

Putting in speed cameras is a typical kneejerk political response (and, of course, a nice way to raise revenue).

When will we get evidence-based speed controls, rather than this sort of unscientific nonsense?!
