Abu Dhabi is introducing tailgating detection via speed cameras in an attempt to reduce collisions on its roads.

From this week, those who fail to leave a safe distance between them and the car in front will receive a warning text message.

The second time will trigger a Dh400 (£84) fine and four points on their licence.

A police spokesman, told The National: "Tailgating was one of the most influential reasons for serious accidents in 2018 and 2019. A safe following distance behind any vehicle is generally known as the two-second-rule; the rule is that a driver should ideally stay at least two seconds behind any vehicle that is directly in front of his or her vehicle”.

A quarter of young drivers surveyed by Road Safety UAE admit to tailgating.

Interested to know how they will receive a text message. Do they have to apply a phone number to a car registration?

And I hope that they are not supposed to read it whilst driving.
