A9 Speed Cameras And The Scottish Economy

Scotland's Transport Minister Keith Brown has promised during a Federation of Small Businesses meeting that the highly controversial A9 speed cameras would be removed if they proved to be ineffective.

The Federation of Small Businesses was the first business organisation to voice opposition to the use of cameras between Dunblane and Inverness.

They have argued that the new average cameras could have a negative effect on the region's economy. The chief executive of Inverness Chamber of Commerce said the Transport Minister's pledge indicated that he was aware of the speed cameras' potential to damage business and tourism.

Brown said he believes that the A9 cameras would make motorists feel safer and therefore actually encourage more traffic to the region.

A spokeswoman for Transport Scotland commented: "Before and after studies of other average speed camera sites in the UK show a reduction in accidents. We firmly believe a safer and more reliable route will be more effective for business and help attract more visitors."

Not knowing the A9 I have looked it up on the maps. There doesn't appear to be a viable alternative road to the A9. Surly the traffic flow shall remain constant because people use it because they have to.

Does Keith Brown really think that there are hoards of people housebound because they don't yet feel safe enough to get out and go for a drive and that installing speed cameras shall help liberate them.?

I was wondering what the criteria were for "effectiveness" of the cameras.
* Reduction in accidents?
* Revenue raised (which tends to be how the greedy measure it)
But no, neither of these. It's the increase of "good" (tourist/business) traffic rather than "bad" speeders. What!? For a start, no-one makes the decision on whether to travel up the A9 based on its speed cameras (whether perceived to be a good or a bad thing). And anyway, how would you determine the cause for any potential increase in traffic without stopping and surveying every one.

Some people should stop and think before spouting their pseudo-political clap-trap.

The only solution to the A9 is to make it all m/way or dual c/way. At present it is part dual c/way and single c/way, and full of Tesco/Asda etc arctics heading to Inverness and limited to only 40mph at some points. It is a recipe for mayhem at the best of times and has to be driven to get how bad it really is. I doubt anyone making these decisions even knows where it is, let alone use it on a daily basis.
