30 average speed cameras are due to be activated later this month on the A90 between Dundee and Stonehaven.

The cameras are coming at a time when new figures report that the number of fatalities on Scotland’s roads rose last year to 191. That's a huge increase of 14% compared to 2015.

There was also a rise in people that were seriously injured on the roads, up 6% to 1,697, of which 1,000 were children.

The overall figures for roads casualties were 1% less over the same period which was the lowest figure since records began.

More encouraging figures show that only sixty four people have died on the roads in the first six months of this year compared to 95 for the same period last year.

Transport minister Humza Yousaf confirmed that the cameras would be activated by the end of October and said that the average speed cameras already in operation on the A9 was helping Scotland hit its road safety targets.
