It seems that many people on our roads still don't get the concept of average speed cameras.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that almost 2,500 speeding motorists were ticketed by them on the A64 roadworks in Yorkshire in 2018.

The devices were installed to protect the workforce and monitored the 40mph limit on both sides of the carriageway from February to August.

A spokesman for Highways England, commented: "During the roadworks the speed limit was reduced to 40mph while we replaced 11 miles of safety barrier along sections of the A64 between Bramham and York, improving safety along this route. Safety is our top priority and the speed cameras and reduced speed limit were there to make journeys safer for drivers while sections of the central reservation were removed."

He added: "Although the majority of drivers kept to the speed limit a number of people were caught exceeding the limit which not only put their own lives at risk but those of other motorists and our workers who were there overnight replacing the barrier."

A significant amount of people are either ignorant of how these cameras work (including foreign drivers), lose concentration or blatantly ignore the speed limit. It's likely that many believe that the cameras are not actually switched on.

For those that don't know, they work by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position. Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.

Lets face it, a very large number of drivers don't know the correct way to drive following both statutory and guidance requirements in the Highway Code let alone 'advance' techniques in recognised publications from IAM and 'Hendon Police Style'.

I bet they will also be found not to understand "SMART Motorways" either.

The Hovis bike was filmed on Golden Hill in Shaftesbury. They’ve got a memorial plastic four foot tall Hovis loaf at the top of the hill.

All I've got near me is the plaque commemorating the first motor vehicle fatality at Grove Hill Harrow, right by the school.

So Dennis' Hovis is bigger than Kremmen's plaque. That's a new spin on an old saying.
