Dangerous Drivers Tackled In Unique Scheme on A38

Hoping to improve road safety, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services joined forces with the Vehicle and Operator Services Industry (VOSA) to address problems on the A38 in a unique scheme.
Prompted to action by the tragic story of two sisters who lost their lives on the stretch of road near the Branston junction in April, the scheme aimed to reduce accident numbers by highlighting the need for more stringent safety measures.
Currently, a review which suggests closing three gaps on the road and introducing lower speed limits is pending, with the state of vegetation on surrounding roads and entry points also coming under scrutiny.
The recent action, which saw drivers monitored by cameras positioned along the carriageway, caught as many as 37 drivers committing an offence on the road in just 5 hours.
Guilty drivers were followed by police motorcyclists before being escorted back to the base of the operation.
Here, the motorists were given the option to view a graphic road safety video instead of being issued with a fixed penalty or points on their licence.
Speaking on behalf of the scheme, PC Nigel Armitage who was directly involved with the road safety operation, labelled it "a big success" and emphasised that the purpose of the scheme was education as opposed to conviction.

I suppose that the next thing will be the Insurance Companies will be asking is 'Have you ever viewed a graphic road safety video instead of being issued with a fixed penalty or points on your licence'.

Probably! It reminds me of a story I heard from an American chap at Morecambe Punk Festival back in 1999. He was telling me about a video called 'Red Asphalt' which was filmed by a team who rushed to road accidents before the emergency services had time to sanitise it all and they used the graphic footage in schools for road safety lessons etc - scare the senseless so they don't joyride... I looked for years and never found it...  Looks like it's not in Staff's polices hands!

As a Police Accident Investigator for many years you can imagine the photographs I collected and in the early 90's I suggested they could be used in road safety lectures/ exhibitions but the reply was "it would be too shocking for public exposure"
I could only use them in my lectures to recruits and groups who specifically requested talks on accident investigation.
I still think it was a good idea but they say everything comes around so maybe !!!

Ah well, that's new technology for you.
Back in the good old days, the police in Yorkshire used to move crashed vehicles to a suitable wide piece of verge on the Tadcaster to York road - drivers were impressed enough to drive carefully for a while. Until they reached the spot where the police had placed a cardboard cutout of a police car to frighten them all over again!
