SmartphoneIt wouldn't be Friday without my having to apologise for something and this week is no different. My light hearted opening comment last week may have offended some of you. This was not intended and so if you were offended, my apologies. I've given myself some managerial advice and it won't happen again.

I had an 'interesting' forum post on another web-site brought to my attention earlier in the week. Motorist forum Pepipoo aims to assist drivers with queries about fixed penalties, parking tickets etc but a discussion about a speed camera in this thread mentioned our database. A poster wrote, "Take no notice of pocketGPS, several 40's round me are all on there as 30's."

I posted in the thread politely asking for more information but apart from a 'are you calling me a liar' response, no further information was forthcoming. So whilst we work our damnedest here trying to make the service as good as it possibly can be, one anonymous poster can undo all that with an unsubstantiated claim.

On a more positive note, we had a small mention in a Yahoo News article about the best apps to make your money go further. Every little helps.

News: CamerAlert - Your Reviews Are Important

ReadMoreCamerAlertSo far, only a small number of those of you who use our CamerAlert app have posted a user review on iTunes or Android Market.

With so many apps to choose from, the only way buyers can make a decision between one app and another is on the basis of user reviews.

So if you use the app can I ask you to post a review. It takes a few minutes at most and could make all the difference to us and to the continued development of the service and expansion to more platforms.

And, as every time we release an update, the review count is reset, if you have posted a review a while ago, pop back and review the latest version?

News: Nav3 Speedcam Install Guide

ReadMoreNav 3 SpeedcamsWith the release of a software update to add POI support to TomTom's Nav3 product line (Go 1000, 1005, Via and variants), owners of those devices can now install our speed camera data.

But there is always a catch. And in this case, the catch is that the newly added POI support is limited and the install process is lengthy.

Whilst we continue to press TomTom for a better solution we have published an installation guide that details the steps required to install and update those devices using our speed camera data.

Debate: Is Dedicated Satnav At The End Of The Road?

ReadMoreHave PNDs Had Their Day?With ever more powerful smartphones appearing every day, and almost all featuring GPS, is there a future for the dedicated PND (Portable Navigation Device)?

Even budget models can have more powerful processors than your average PND, leaving screen real estate as the only real area in which they can score points.

So is there a long term market for the PND? Is the "Jack of all trades" smartphone really a true alternative or do PND's still have a place in the future GPS market?

News: TomTom Launch Online Live Traffic Map

ReadMoreTomTom Live Traffic MapTomTom officially launched an online live traffic map service Wednesday, powered by HD Traffic.

Whilst TomTom will no doubt be hoping that this free service will serve as an advert for the quality of the HD Traffic data, it also serves as a useful tool for anyone planning to undertake a journey.

And for those of you who have seen this site already, it was soft-launched a few weeks back to iron out any bugs but is now official.

Reviewed: TOM BIHN Ristretto for iPad Bag

ReadMoreTomBihn RistrettoWe have reviewed a few bags in the past and whilst they may at first seem to have a tenuous connection to the core raison d'etre of PocketGPSWorld, it's not as questionable as it may at first appear.

Most of you will have amassed a collection of gadgetry and therefore will likely carry more than one item of tech with you when you travel. The age old joke of the man bag means that few British blokes would dare to carry all the accoutrements they may need in anything bigger than a coat pocket.
