News: Tesla Rolls Out Autopilot Feature
Tesla began rolling out the much vaunted Autopilot feature to its Model S pure electric car this week.
Included in the latest software update (yes cars get software updates too now!), v7.0 enables the Model S to use its cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors and GPS to automatically steer, change lanes and adjust speed in response to traffic and hazards.
Now that might seem like a press release from the near future but it's not, this is happening now and as you'd expect, despite warnings that "Tesla requires drivers to remain engaged and aware when Autosteer is enabled. Drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel." there are plenty of YouTube videos already appearing showing owners ignoring this although it has to be said, what did Tesla expect when they call it 'Autopilot'?.
Regardless, the software is impressive and there are also videos showing the car react to hazards that the driver hasn't seen and one that clearly shows it avoiding a collision that may otherwise had a very nasty and expensive outcome (YouTube).
