That's what happens on my 2597, Smartlink, with bluetooth on, is the boss. _________________ Satnav:

so is the smartlink traffic overall better than the DAB traffic
one problem you get is if in an area with no mobile signal and mobile doesn't pick it back up, you have no traffic warnings as device will not revert back to DAB if not receiving the data or you disconnect the mobile
ie on saturday i had no mobile signal from when in atherstone from around 12pm until I got back to south yoskhire @ 6pm and rebooted my mobile. if my phone was linked to the garmin at the time i would have had no traffic information |

Try the cable and see what reception you get.
When I used Smartlink, before they wrecked it, it was quite good. I switched to cable and never had any issues.
As you say it's all down to reception. _________________ Satnav:

i'm currently using just the cable
but it's annoying if you enable smartlink for any other feature the smartlink traffic kicks in and can't be disabled until you disconnect phone and reboot satnav, which then makes you think why have built-in dab if the smartlink features will override it when you connect the phone.
you can't have notifications only (ie for messages, calls, route changes) if you want to connect the mobile |

If you turn off Smartlink on your phone then you can use the cable for traffic but plain bluetooth for the rest (handsfree phone), I think. _________________ Satnav:

do you still use smartlink - have tried searching for a place so can send to satnav - i can't get it to find any addresses properly if more than so many miles away |

I use the cable Inrix traffic now.
There is a thread with pictures about it somewhere here but I cable tied my 'coiled against advice' TA10 to a dashboard metal bracket which must be acting as an aerial booster as I'm getting 4 out 5 bars signal.
The end result is I only have about 4" to 5" of cable showing as the rest is hidden.
I use Smartlink indoors on my 2597 test rig. _________________ Satnav:

The DAB traffic is fine, it was just that in some areas you get no DAB but get mobile signal and vice-versa in other areas.
So it would be good to be able switch between them. |

Good point.
I've not noticed any reception issues down here but then I don't drive around looking for the occasional spinning wheel _________________ Satnav:

Nor do I, but noticed on Saturday if had phone linked and using smartlink features I would have had no traffic information as my phone had been reporting no signal for a few hours, due to where I was.
We also go to Scotland a few times a year and the mobile reception there is poor and the same in certain parts of cumbria and northumberland. If we had only smartlink to rely on then you get no traffic, so it should give you the option between switching providers like when on DAB, but it doesn't |

I agree, a bit more thought into developing a system where it can choose the best would be good.
Of course if the various mobile companies sorted out their coverage but that's another argument. _________________ Satnav:

When I first got my 2598, it had problems such as hanging if I was using smartlink and the powered aerial. The only way around that was to use a standard charger and Smartlink or the supplied charger/aerial and not use Smartlink.
I think the system did try to use the best option but it caused problems so now the default is Smartlink if its connected to a phone. |

Still not getting any myTrends even though the option is selected
And this is what happens in certain area, even though GPS is fine
I noticed it does a slightly paler blue for the directions if not on a motorway, but have seen it say 'Continue on M621' but in grey as though it didn't know exactly where it was. |
