I wish I'd had that update before I set off for Portugal.

The maps of Spain and France from earlier this year were OK but southern Portugal was a disaster. According to the Garmin, I was in a field most of the time as there were so many altered and new roads. The worst incident was "At the end of the road, turn left" and straight into the on coming traffic on what was now a dual carriageway. Fortunately it was daylight and there was a fair amount of traffic but in the dark with no traffic, it was potentially very dangerous.

I also got fed up of being unnecessarily routed along minor single track roads on Portugal. I will be complaining/suggesting to Garmin they figure out an "Easy" or large vehicle option to avoid all these narrow roads.

In the end, if it mentioned "the road" with no other identifier at an intersection, I ignored it.

I've solved that one, I'm going to Eastbourne tomorrow instead, Portugal can wait

Hmmm .... Taken mine to Portugal three times now, first in the Faro area and twice driven from Lisbon down to Albufeira and driven around the area including up into the hills, and never had an issue.

Strange that for the first time my 2597 needed a card.

Opted to just do UK&I and loads of room. It's only a test device so no issue.

And I suspect that's a reason trucks get caught out on narrow roads etc.
C'mon Garmin, your suspect routeing been complained about for years now. Get it sorted and don't plead ignorance.

I agree. I've not used my Garmin for routeing but from the complaints I understand the frustration.

Years ago, before cars has built in jobs, I had and used a very first TomTom v1. Small 3" screen and quite fat. The routeing on that was spot on so back then TT had it cracked.
It had no traffic or mapshare or any other pointless addons and the like (did take the cameras though) but it did the job in hand.

Home at last!

As you can see, we did just over 6,000km there and back at 5.0l/100km (56mpg in old money).



The car was faultless. Didn't even use any oil, but the windscreen had to be cleaned of flies a few times. Can't believe we went that far and never had a hiccup. The only worry I had was the fear of a temperate climate car overheating in tropical temperatures of over 40°C, max-ing at 47°C. But we were fine even though the A/C was going flat out.

Full marks to my dealer for the thorough service before we left - they replaced the brake fluid, checked Eolys and re-charged the A/C for no extra charge, i.e. all done for £199. Oh, and 4 new Michelins for £250.

The loss of 3D effect on nuvi 3598 etc is reportedly because the installer has deleted the DEM file on your device, even though there is no updated DEM to provide.

Just restore the DEM file from your backup (see separate thread on this board).

(The 3D map is a different subject - it provides the 3D buildings on some models).
