Need to buy a receiver for my laptop. Have read many posts, but there are varying reports about many PC compatible receivers. The laptop will be operated by passengers.

Questions:

Will the receiver need to be outside of the vehicle or at least by the windscreen? Or will it work anywhere in the vehicle?

Which is best USB, serial or bluetooth?

Got access to mappoint 2004 and autoroute 2004. Are these any good to use for GPS?

was going to go for the HI-204E, but posts say not to bother cos of the chipset....how bad are they really?

Also looked at royaltek sapphire USB and the GPSmart BT device, do these use the best chipset?

Got about £100 for the receiver. Thx

By the windscreen will be fine for most cars unless you have a UV/Athermic coated windscreen in which case either outside, or you will need a re-rad antenna. Most cars should be okay though.

Personally I'd go with USB if you're using a laptop, the USB port will power the GPS without the need of special cables. If you want as fewer cables as possible, go for Bluetooth.

Not really, your best bet will be Either going for CoPilot Laptop 7 or Directions InfoMap Navigator. We have a review of both products here

Personally I'd avoid Evermore chipsets where possible.

GPSMart isn't really built for quality, the RoyalTek Sapphire is a good GPS and we have it listed under the Car Powered review section.

thank for the reply.

Went for the royaltek and it works very well, happy with it. The autoroute is ok if you want to see where you are, but for directions and speech it is weak. Will look at the recommended software. Any recommendations for the speech side of things?

Infomap is reasonable for the price .. I find it woefully lacking though if go anywhere off major routes, it still finds the way but it just doesn't give voice commands..

Co-Pilot is supposed to be excellent, but its a lot of money.
