My ancient Cyclops GPS detector has finally died and can't be fixed.
I like the Cyclops database and discovered that it is standard on Garmin Sat navs.
Will the sat nav show the camera alerts if I don't select a route?
My plan is to buy a cheapo Garmin and just use it for the alerts in much the same way as my old Cyclops.

I have the PGPSW database on a Tomtom but I find that it keeps alerting me to cameras which are not active in my direction of travel, which is irritating...

It's a while since I had Cyclops on my Garmin, preferring instead the PGPSW files which are more up to date, but IIRC the cameras alerted whether you were on a route or not.

Only word of caution is that Garmin invariably change the way their devices behave from one year to the next, so to really answer your question you'll need to decide which nuvi you'd like to buy and find someone with a similar one.

I agree with Cyclops being out of date. My other issue with Cyclops is that it just produces a 'bong' over a tiny dot which could be easily missed. The PGPSW cameras allow for a louder spoken alert and a large 44x44 icon if required.

Unfortunately the installation of third party cameras by POILoader means that they are not directional. I would rather be informed to all cameras than an outdated directional set.

The gpx format allowed by POILoader uses the 'wpt' (waypoint) format which works. There is another 'trk' (Trek) format that allows a directional degress tag but so far I've not been able to find the exact requirements of the trk format to test it.
