I was talking to a couple of customers at work this morning who regularly motorcycle but also drive vans for work. It appears they have been made aware that the new average speed cameras installed on the A12 at Kelvedon (and other locations) have the ability to discriminate between vehicle types. If that's the case then speeds will drop even lower as vans will be passing HGV's at an even slower pace in order to avoid a ticket.
They also mentioned that the infamous 40mph limit for roadworks on the road south of Ipswich use front-facing Specs with little aerials that, if they don't 'see' a number plate (as on a motorcycle) they can communicate to the specs on the opposite carriageway which will take a picture of the rear number plate. Now this one seems a little far fetched to me as it wasn't that long ago that changing lanes in an average speed camera zone provided a loophole in court and tbh I doubt the camera has the focal ability to be pointed at a spot on the road and still provide a good enough picture for evidence in court.

Simples. Average speed cameras (or SPECS) work using number plate recognition. Need I explain more?
And incidentally, gatso cams can tell the difference between small and large vehicles.
Photographic evidence in specs zones is irrelevant, except perhaps to identify the driver. If the camera is good enough to provide a suitable image so that number plate recognition software can read it, they aint going to be low resolution now are they?

Agreed. But the only time I ever saw HGV's actually braking for a static speed camera in a NSL was on the A1 N/b Gonerby Moor just before the services.
