I think I've dragged this post well off topic now so I've posted this mornings shots in a new thread. _________________ Satnav:

I stand to be corrected but I believe the term "Naas" is a Garmin abbreviation/acronym for "Not at anticipated speed". This covers all reasons for delays: congestion, roadworks and incidents, etc.
I suspect that all Garmin devices signal their location and current speed anonymously to all other Garmin devices and an automatic picture builds up when some of them on the same road all come to a stop or move slowly, thus generating the colour codes.
Hope this helps |

They do, however, do something similar to what you suggest with mobile phones, as they have a transmitter(There's lucky). |

Naas is not Garmin but a viaMichelin term that may well be what you mention. I haven't used Smartlink for over a year now due to the proliferation of expired roadworks it kept telling me about.
May be OK in some parts of the country but in West London the sheer number of false roadworks reports seemed to be filling the buffer to the extent that proper traffic reports were being ommited. _________________ Satnav:

Yes, I said it was a Garmin term and maybe I should have simply said it was an industry term. I now know it stands for "Network as a service". It's a virtual network created by the devices talking to each other, so if a few of them are together and travelling slowly on the same road it comes up in the colour bands. I don't live in a built up area, but I think the banding is not old roadworks but traffic moving at speeds less than the device is anticipating in that area. I've seen banding around busy roundabouts and there is nothing there except slow traffic and there has never been any roadworks there. I guess the acid test of this is to see if the bands are still there in the early hours when the road is not congested. |
