Essex man, Darren Girling, has been jailed thanks to his electronic ankle tag - a surveilance gadget nicknamed "Chav Nav" that constantly monitored his movements and precisely pinpointed his wherabouts 24/7.

Basildon Crown Court was told on Friday that 38 year old Girling had triggered the same speed camera on two ocassions on the A13 in Leigh Essex.

He was caught riding his Piaggio scooter at 41 mph in a 30mph zone on November 17 and 18 in 2013.

He denied both ocurrences, saying that it was not his Piaggio and the number plate had been cloned to another scooter.

It wasn't too much of a stretch for Essex police to prove otherwise, as Girling had previously volunteered to wear an electronic tag called a "Buddi".

The wearing of the tag was set as a condition after he was given an eight-year deferred sentence for committing 80 burglaries in 2013.

Adam Pipe commented for Essex Police: "Girling made numerous false claims to try to avoid the speeding fines. He claimed he was not the rider, that the scooter had been cloned and that he was elsewhere when the offences happened. Even when we had the evidence from the tag he claimed it was not accurate."

Getting caught speeding is one thing, but astonishingly, Girling was also convicted of a series of other more serious offences including 2 charges of perverting the course of justice, 2 counts of cannabis production, 6 charges of stealing from motor vehicles, fraud and also making threats against a police officer.

Additionally, he was charged with causing criminal damage to his tag which he cut off after it dawned on him that it might be incriminating him.

Essex police were the first force in the country to present live evidence from a Buddi tag in court. Girling was jailed for two years.
