Got a new PC a while back and it has 2 drives. a solid state 100 Gb one. and a 1 terrabyte drive. me being completely useless with computers, instead of saving all downloads to the big drive have just been installing them to the small drive. and now the small drive reaching its capacity.

found a program that interrogates your drive and tells you what is what, "WinDirStat" this shows that 30 + Gb is Garmin mapping.

my question is: when you look at Garmin list it has previous copies all loaded on the drive. Can I delete the previous ones and keep latest update. or are they all dependent on each other.

OR can I move them to the big drive. if so how please......

I dont want to loose Mapsource as cant get my head around Basecamp

OR can I move them to the big drive

Is it a Windows machine? If so what version of Windows. If you have been saving them to 'My Documents', that is located on the system drive by default, but you can move the 'my' stuff to the large drive. When you move them, it moves the files as well. Need to know what version of Windows before explaining how. You could also Google 'move my documents' or have a look at this MS page

Is this mapping at C:\Program data\Garmin\Core Update Service?

If so you can delete all the old stuff.

You can also go to Control Panel, Uninstall a Program and you'll see all the various maps there, again you can delete all but the current one. Note if you 'lose' Mapsource you'll also 'lose' Basecamp if you're talking about the maps ... as they both use the same map data. That shouldn't happen though provided you leave the latest maps installed.

Your other option is to run JaVaWa's GMTK from here http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html

It allows you to see what maps are installed and delete the ones you no longer need.

GMTK also allows you to move the maps that you want Mapsource/Basecamp to use.

But the OP should be looking to get all his data off the system SSD and onto the 1TB HDD. This will also make backing up the System and data drives separately more logical. [rant]You do backup your data, don't you? Or do you live on the edge of your whole digital life going down the tubes when the HDD fails? The times you see on the TV a sad story about people having their laptop nicked/lost with their irreplaceable family photos on it. Have they not heard of backups? No point crying after the event: as the cheapo supermarkets say 'when they have gone they have gone'. (Unless you have them backed up. [/rant]

windows 7

Nooooo...not quite that bad..do back up data occasionally. external H/D sits on top of my PC. thanks for the replies. Im nervous about deleting old copies as I had a real job getting mapsource to work on this PC..finally managed it with excellent support with Garmin sending me an earlier version as later disks wouldn't load without it..

earliest I have on PC is 2011 this the one that Garmin sent I think..... I will try and ID versions and post on here

Agreed, GMTK should enable him to do that safely.

As above, GMTK should take care of it all for you IF you want to move the latest map, but you could probably just leave that one on your SSD, as it should only be about 3Gb.

The trick to getting Mapsource to run is first to install Basecamp. Mapsource needs a 'previous' Garmin map, which Basecamp (with its basemap) supplies. You don't need any disks at all then.

Install Basecamp from here

http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/basecamp

then Mapsource from here

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Mapsource will then work with the basemap. Now use GMTK to backup the maps you want to move onto a card/stick and using GMTK on your new laptop 'restore' the backup.

i'm not risking updating till after our holiday that starts tomorrow.

so when you get lifetime mapping upgrades, dont they overwrite the old maps. surprised garmin don't tell you its OK to remove previous versions
