From TomTom to Garmin

I've just had a thought, Joy may have got her computer to not show extensions and/or possibly does not realise that files have extensions so she can't tell if it's an exe or a zip. And I can't remember how to do it

This is what I did: I re- downloaded the Garmin POI loader, it went to a folder called "downloads", and I moved it to Program files\Garmin, where I had already saved the POI downloads. I then re-downloaded sox.exe, and extracted the zipped files to the same folder. So in that folder I have the POI loader, the POI camera files, and the sox files, as well as some others.

I then launched POI loader, and browsed for that folder, and it imported the files..... and I got the same message about not being able to convert the .wav files.

Where have I gone wrong?

If you download and run my app it shows 3 boxes with all the files. If they all go green then that will at least tell us that you have teh correct files in the correct place:

I'd love to do that, but can you please explain exactly how to do it? Where do I download it to - the same folder as the POI loader? And what then?

I'm normally quite computer literate, and my colleagues often consult me about computer-related issues at work, but this is too clever by half for me! So far I have got the files downloaded and, apart from the voice alerts, onto my satnav. The sox.exe file has been unzipped and placed in the same folder as the POI loader (which is listed as POI loader, and not POI loader.exe - does that matter?)

Am I being phenomenally stupid? Please someone, give me an idiot's guide to how it's done! Thanks.

The folder I have is in C\Program files (x86)\Garmin, and this is what is in it:

Sub-folders called:

Base Camp

and files:

all the pocket gps .bmp, csv and wav files

sox.exe

Perhaps some of these should be elsewhere, perhaps the POI Loader is incorrect (but it launches from my desktop). Anyway, that's the folder.

Any ideas? I'm sure someone can help. Thanks

That could be your problem, unless you've written it wrong ... sox.exe should be IN the POI Loader folder

Well, I might have done it! I re-loaded the sox file into the POI Loader folder, launched POI Loader and imported all the files. This time I didnt get any messages about not being able to convert the .wav files. Now I have to wait till I get on the roads where I know there are cameras, to check it all out, which won't be for a couple of days.

So watch this space!

You can probably check it by going into simulation mode ... and running a route past a camera.

Hi joy,

I to have crossed from TT to the dark side and have the same navi as you and have also gone through the new learning curve of the strange POI setup of Garmin.

Sounds like you may have it all setup now, I have mine working perfectly using Kremmen's superb software as detailed above, so if you are still stuck I should be able to assist without problem.

Here are just a few things.....
To put POIs on Nuvi you must use POI loader, unlike TT where you can just copy & paste the files.

You do not need to remove the SD card from the Nuvi, connect your Nuvi to your PC via the USB socket. POI loader should find your device (does not always on mine, I have to remove &re-insert USB sometimes) In POI loader, the drop down box will let you select the Nuvi memory or the SD card.
Whilst you have your Nuvi connected to the PC, also run 'Garmin Express' as this will check for updates.

I keep two directories on my PC, one 'Garmin-PGPSW' this is where I extract the PGPSW weekly speed cam updates to, and a second directory 'Garmin POI' where I have subdirectories containing all of my other POIs.
This saves having to reload all of the POIs every week when just the speed cams need updating.

You only need to point POI loader the main directory, POI loader will then load all of the other subdirectories it finds. In my Garmin POI directory, I have sub directories of DIY, Supermarkets, Aldi_Lidl and all of my work POIs. Don't forget you can combine POI types into one POI type using the excellent PGPSW web site, for example I combine all of the main supermarkets into one 'Supermarket' POI

The speed cam pictures are far too small on the Nuvi, so using advise found on this forum I have doubled their size using 'FastStone Photo Resizer'
Put your new bigger pictures into the pgps folder, overwriting the existing ones. Make sure when you are using Kremmens POI converter program to extract the PGPSW cameras you select 'unzip PGPS camera files' this way you will not overwrite your new camera pictures.
(I can always email these bigger pictures to you)

If you have previously loaded the pgps database directly rather than with POI Converter, make sure you use POI Loader to remove all custom POIs first, else you could end up with a mix of files.

And the final tip, always use Kremmens POI Converter to manage and load the PGPSW speed cameras. It makes the job very easy and removes many duplicate warnings you would otherwise get.

And the final final tip (which may upset Kremmen, Sorry) I don't like having the PGPSW voice warnings and the ones generated by POI Converter (either just a bong or speech if you have got a bit more advanced) at every camera, so after each camera update I go into the camera folder and delete the 'overspeed' files.

Right, think I have waffled enough....

Yes I realise this, however I was just trying to keep things simple. With TT it is much easier to wack the POIs onto the device & Joy has come from the TT world into the nightmare that is Garmin POI handling.

If we start giving other alternatives of how to handle POIs we are just adding confusion. ' Use POI Loader to put the POIs on your device' I think is the easiest method to start with.

if simulation mode was not a pita, I would try it on mine. I have heard reports that speed cam announcements do not work in simulation mode anyway.

If you have the pgpsw database downloaded and also selected the option to download the voices as WAV and have the sox.exe file in the POI Loader directory it should work fine :o)
