But do the cams show on the screen when you approach them, or is it both the icons and the audio warnings that are missing? We seem to just be concentrating on the audio side of things here

I've now reloaded the lot, putting the sox file into the same folder as the POI loader ( I realised that I had been a bit stupid about the location), and getting it all onto the micro SD card and from there into the device.

Will try it out yet again tomorrow morning!

I thought Garmins only give a warning if you're exceeding the speed limit on the approach to a camera.

I may well be wrong as I don't really follow the Garmin threads, but could that be why you aren't getting any warnings, JoyP?

Seems that I left a question mark out of my last post somewhere.
Edited to include it.

I do get a "bong" from the device when there is a camera and I'm exceeding the limit on the approach. I assumed that this is from the Garmin camera alerts and not the PocketGPS ones. I also get an on-screen written message about the cameras as I approach them - but so far, no voice alerts which are what I feel are most useful!

Will post back here tomorrow after I've tested my latest update.

Hello, I'm still getting no voice alerts. I do get the icons! And the cameras are listed under "custom POIs" on the device, so I know they are there. What I suspect may be wrong is that I have put the sox file in the "Garmin/ POI loader" folder, instead of just in the "Garmin" folder. How it all works is a mystery to me, but I'll try moving it out of the POI folder into just the Garmin one.

If that works I want to try the Garmin CSV to GPX Converter, as it looks as if by using that I can get alerts similar to the ones I had on my TomTom. Wish me luck with that. Any instructions about how to do it?

Right then. Now we know that the POI icons are there and it's only the voice alerts that are missing.
Have you followed the instructions here?
I don't have a Garmin but know there is a difference depending on whether the device has an MP3 player or not. I believe that if it has, you just need the MP3 files, but if it hasn't you need the wav audio files and sox.exe. Dales has told you how to find out where sox.exe should go.
C'mon you Garmin experts, help us out a bit here.

I don't use the voice files so can't offer much help, but I do know that you don't have a mp3 player on your nuvi so need the .wav files

Also sox.exe has to go in the SAME folder as the POI loader .exe file, which is normally (unless the user takes any other action than as suggested from the POI Download webpage) C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\POI Loader\

Which Tomtom model did you (do you still) have?

Did it die?

I have the TomTom 820 Go Live. It was very good, and I liked it, but it started freezing on a regular basis, which was very annoying, and in the end I gave up and thought I'd have a change. The Garmin is very nice, but getting these files onto it is so different!

Oh dear! I just ran the POI loader again, having moved the sox.exe file to the Garmin folder, and noticed that I have a message by each of the .wav files that it was unable to convert it to the proper format, therefore this audio file was not transferred. No wonder I don't get the voice warnings. What do I do now?

Joy,

You get the error message because PoiLoader cannot find sox.exe to perform the .wav conversion.

Did you unzip the sox.exe first? ie is it called sox.zip or sox.exe?

Did you get sox.exe from the link that MaFt provided above? (because some other versions apparently do not work). Try downloading a fresh copy.

In the same folder that you put sox.exe, can you also see a file called POILoader.exe? If you can't then sox.exe is in the wrong place. (Me and Kremmen and sussamb have described earlier where sox.exe should be put).

Let us know your answers to these points of mine.

Follow the steps carefully, and we WILL get it to work.

Dales.
