Surely those who do not have any car insurance would not be put off by rising premiums because a 131 per cent increase on zero, is still zero!

But what about thos who 'occasionally drift past' their renewal date.Surely it should be the same as for thjose who 'occasionally drift past' the speed limit |

There is a world of difference between people who intentionally do not insure and those that drift a few days over - insurance companies charge so much now that they ought to include a "drift period" anyway!
As for people drifting over the speed limit. Well fine them if you like but don't give penalty points - if the authorise used speeding as a form of taxation without penalty points then I would not have such a problem with speed cameras. However people who intentionally speed (i.e. 15 or 20 mph or more over the speed limit) depending on the type of road, perhaps they should get penalty points.

Quote: | Driving with a hand-held device was the next most common offence, although this accounted for only 10% of those with a conviction. It increased premiums by 49%. |
That is because they can not be caught on cameras
Quote: |
Failing to comply with traffic light signals was the third most common offence; it resulted in the smallest (24%) increase in the cost of a premium |
Smallest increase in premium yet one of the most dangerous action
Driving through a red light in a city is far more risky in most cases than doing 40 on a dual carriage way with a 30 limit

I don't think many would blatantly ignore a redlight, I thought it was most likely people trying to squeeze through on amber and not quite making it? This probably does not result in many collisions, but a conviction would still increase your premium.
I'm just reminded again that you can't trust other road users, even though I drive in the [misguided] expectation of a certain level of competence amongst fellow drivers. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

As a motorcyclist I am often at the front of a traffic queue. It is sometime quite astonishing how many vehicle pass a red light. Many only seem to be aware of the vehicle directly in front of them. Concentrating so intently on giving no opportunity for someone to take the 6 ft of space they are following by in case they are delayed by a further 10th of a second.
Frequently around Manchester city center area my lights will have changed green and still vehicle are coming across the stop line and across my path.
The poor driving standards across the whole of the UK is quite frightening. |

I've often wondered why so many motorcyclists insist on pushing to the front of a queue at traffic lights.
(which usually means they end up in front of the stop line).
I assumed it was because as you say:

....but maybe there's a much better reason for them barging in rather than waiting their turn in line! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Now there speaks somebody who (like me) has experienced the joy of a dangerously close fly-by carried out by a motorbike in London (carried out by half a dozen motorbikes in London), often stopping at an angle across the front of my vehicle because the bicycle reserved area is already full of motorbikes. _________________ Dennis

My experience is it is usually full of car drivers creeping further an d further into the junction.
But just imagine for one moment if all those bike that pass you took the car instead and sat in a queue every morning like you do, would you ever get where you are going?
M8TJT wrote: | It's because they can. | Too right.
I use the bike for commuting because it makes sense, my journey to work takes 20 mins max on the bike, in the car its a minimum of 20 mins and more often much much more. Cycling takes around 30 mins so sometimes I do that instead (but I avoid the major roads and use canal and cycle paths where possible for safeties sake) |

They'd all be behind me, not passing me, so I'd get there sooner. _________________ Dennis
