I'm new to this but my Kenwood DNX7240BT which has Garmin software embedded, it doesn't connect via the communicator plugin, I'm rumming Firefox 10.0.2 and Windows 7 32 bit Home Edition. I've tried 4 different USB ports (all of which work perfectly with other devices). My unit asks me if I want to run in Garmin or Mass Storage Mode each time I plug it into my PC, I've tried both with the plugin but it wont detect it. If I run the device in Mass Storage Mode then I can read the whole directory structure and transfer files just as if it were another drive, which is exactly what I'd expect, also the Garmin Loader software works fine in Garmin Mode.
I went to the link http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ without the USB connected and the site reports that the plugin is up to date and installed correctly. Version 4.0.1.
Then I reset the unit and plugged in the USB, choosing Garmin mode.
I then refreshed the web page and it reports that it is trying to find my device and has a clock type icon that goes round and says please wait a moment.
After 5 mins of that I guessed it was unable to find it.
I've also tried running it with Mass Storage mode selected but I'm pretty sure that's not right although nothing seems to tell me which one I should use.
So the site says the plugin is OK and when I use the Garmin POI loader software in Garmin mode it all works fine.
I downloaded and installed Garmin's USB drivers but the website still wont find it.
I have also been trying to get to grips with updating via a CD. Every time I've tried this I get informed by the unit that there's a disc error, does the CD need to have a volume label and if so, what?
For the Media Update CD, what label and directory structure do you use and I could do with same info for the Garmin system software please. I'm pretty well conversant with file and directory (or folders as we now have to call them) structures.
Some posts have also reported that it's case sensitive too. As for loading POI's, I use the mini USB socket to connect to my PC, the unit then prompts me with Garmin or Mass Storage mode. I can (in Mass Storage) then communicate as if it were another drive and just copy the GPI file direct into the folder \Garmin\POI.So, does anyone have any thoughts on that cos I'm rapidly running out of them.
I have asked Garmin the question but they just say "Use the latest Communicator plugin and Firefox (even though I'd told them I was using it) and it will work", no mention of which mode to use, just it will work".

Regards Terry Bruce.
