3rd Party add ons - OK for newer TomTom?

Hello all, been a subbie for 3 or more years but still very much a newbie in terms of tech stuff.
I've done a search through the forum and cannot see a relevant answer; did I read on one of the weekly updates that the newer versions of TomTom will not accept 3rd party add ons such as the speed cam database?
I'm faced with buying a new sat-nav but won't get a TomTom if the above is true. Can anyone confirm?
