Hi folks
Am thinking of upgrading from my 950 Live to either the 1000 or 1005
I seem to recall TomTom stopped you being able to load your own POI on newer models.
Can you put your own POI on any of the 2 above
Also, i dont see much difference between the 1000 and 1005.... apart from price
Any help appreciated
Cheers

Hi,

Yes, you can now add POIs to these devices.

1005 = 5" screen
1000 = 4.3" screen

One thing you need to know, is that you cannot "browse" the TomTom's storage memory with Windows Explorer any more (the new models are "locked down" and don't appear as "mass storage devices"), so you cannot add your POI files in the way you used to.

You need to use "MyTomTom", which is the replacement for the old utility program, "Home".
On there you can select "Add community content" and use a web-based interface to add POIs, voices, colour schemes etc.

Thanks Andy
I see..interesting... am guessing "my tom tom" is a prog similar to "TT home" then? and you add files via My Tom Tom and navigate to where the POI files are on my computer?? I take it the POI files are still .ov2 files?
I ordered a 1005 which will arrive tomorrow Razz
Cheers again

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Spot on! Very Happy

But if you thought 'Home' was a bit weird, you ain't seen nuthin' yet...

MyTomTom takes a bit of getting used to.
You start off with the "MyTomTom" program, and that just appears as an icon in the PC's system tray, next to the clock. Nothing else, no window, nothing.

But it does change colour if there's something to update.

Then if you click on it, you get a small pop-up box, and on that there are two main selections "MyTomTom" and "Add community content".

(pic 1)

Clicking on either of them opens browser windows in Internet Explorer, Firefox or whatever you normally use.

----------------

In "Add community content" you can add POI files, Voices, Warning sounds, Map colour schemes, start-up and shutdown images etc.

(pic 2)
You do have to have them already, there's no "shop" like there was in Home.
The biggest drawback there is if you use I.E. you can only add one file at a time. In Firefox,Chrome, Opera etc. you can use "shift" or "control" on the keyboard to make selections of loads of files at once for uploading.

----------------

In the main "MyTomTom" browser window, you get messages about new items TomTom wants you to download.

(pic 3)

----------------

And finally, in the top right of that browser window, there is a green box labelled (you've guessed it,,,,) "MyTomTom" where you can create an account (don't forget to use a complete new email address, not the same as you used your old model), log in, and also "Manage content" where you're supposed to be able to remove maps from the unit if you want to make space for others.

So that's THREE different parts of the process, all different, but all called "MyTomTom" Rolling Eyes

(Apologies if the pictures don't show, my ISP's webspace is being terribly flaky at the moment)

Three theories....
1. TomTom were forced to make major changes to the file system after they had the pants sued off them by Microsoft in a test case.
2. They were getting hammered by map piracy and needed to "lock down" the system.
3. They lost all their senior designers who understood how it all worked, so had to start all over again!

I suspect the true answer may be a bit of all of them! Laughing
