Hi there,
Apologies of this is the wrong forum... Couldn't quite decide the best place to post. Please feel free to point me elsewhere.
I'm getting fed up with my 5+ year old Garmin Nuvi: small screen, slow processor AND some really dodgy routes it's taken me down - how it's not ended up being thrown out of my car window I don't know..!
So... In the new found world of iPhones, I'm thinking it would make sense to use that for my next SatNav
I saw that Garmin have now released a UK version of it's iPhone app, and as far as I can tell doesn't require an external cradle like to TomTom does (although I accept I'd have to buy some kind of mount)
So... Which is the better solution? The TT with the ££ mount, some kind of traffic info system (which I'm yet to understand) or the Garmin with it's photo junctions and in-app purchasing of traffic info?
Also, how does the CamerAlert app work with either app? Does it simply run in the background an ping when you're near a camera, or doesn't map it too?
Sorry for so many questions, but I want to make my next GPS purchase the right one - I never felt that way about the Garmin I've so often sworn at

Firstly, you have an iPhone4 which has a decent GPS receiver inside it so you don't need the TomTom iPhone car kit, any powered car holder will be fine for whatever GPS nav software you decide to install. I use a Brodit powered holder low down on the center console in the car with no issues in terms of GPS signal reception.
Software:
Navigon, worth considering as its great in use even if a little costly.
TomTom, works well and doesn't require an external GPS cradle to work with.
Garmin, new kid on the block, a few things still missing as mentioned in the thread about this specific app but in use quite good, the photo realistic junctions are very good.
Co-Pilot, not bad although I never got on with the user interface, this is a bargain app for the price if you can get used to it.
Sygic, used to be a very good app but the newer version has reduced functionality.
iGo, again very good if a little costly although this is another one that I never get on with the user interface when in use.
As for CamerAlert it simply runs in the back ground offering alerts of cameras as you approach them, easy to update and very effective in use.
There are ways to add the database from PGPSW and activate warnings within the TomTom app but this is an unsupported feature, once configured it works very well - Mike
