hi

I've just changed cars, last one had integrated sat nav in. Now I dont but have an iPhone 4. I wont use it that much, but it is handy to have when needed.

I bought NDrive for iPhone a while ago as it was £4.99, bargain I thought for a full UK sat nav, its fine, but its now disappeared off the app store, so is unsupported.

What is the best to use? I know TT probably is but its £50, for my use probably too much, Co-Pilot is £20, but seems you cant add your own POI!?! why? this function I like to use, as us them off PGW.

I've seen Nav Free but unsure on the reliability of maps, also seen Nav Mii, but again unsure what maps they use, and I've emailed a wekk ago to ask, and no reply.

Any comments please
cheers

NavMii for £2.99 isn't a bad deal. Works well too.

Do you know what map data it uses? is it commercial data? is the map data upto date? Can it use safety cameras?

Thanks for that, forgot to add to my original question, I would like safety camera on the app as well, either built in or as an addition.

NavFree uses OpenStreetMap data (so not complete but would give you a feel of the software before buying the proper version)

NavMii uses either TeleAtlas or NavTeq maps - sorry can't be 100% certain as not installed at the moment!!

NavMii can use speed cams as an in-app purchase - they use our data but no idea how frequently they update them! Safest bet would be to use CamerAlert in the background for the speed cam warnings.

So for £3 NavMii would be better way as at least commercial map data yes? Is it the same data as TT and Co-Pilot etc?

Yes seen the in app purchase of cam alerts, cool its from you, but as you say, unsure how update them.

What about POIs in NavMii, can you add them, using PGW POIs?

If you had choice what would you buy? which one?

cheers

No matter what Navigation app you use, pgpsw's CamerAlert bought and running separately costs you 59 pence to buy, you get an instant free update to the latest database and any further updates require you to become a subscriber for £19.99. The app runs alongside anything else (in background or foreground, your choice). Update is press a button in the CamerAlert app, on the fly (eg as you walk out to the car in the morning, or wait for the kids to get in), and you get the latest up to the minute database there and then, any day, every day. It's a no-brainer.

TomTom and CoPilot use TomTom Maps (formerly TeleAtlas Maps). Other navigation apps use Navteq. Navteq and TomTom are the 2 main commercial map providers (at least in UK/Europe).

they will be update in teh app but i don't know if they do it weekly or if you only get updates when they update the app (probably twice a year...)

none of the iphone nav apps will take custom POIs without jailbreaking or a lot of messing about. sygic aura, when updated later in the year, will support 3rd party POIs but that's a £40-£50 app.

of the low price nav app's (navmii, ndrive (defunct), navv (formerly ndrive)) i would go for navmii though if you already have ndrive and don't need it much then why not keep using that?

Wow thats bad, that was a great thing I like when I had Windows Mobile PDAs, the PGW POI database was great for loading on, why is this? Apple being being I expect? nothing external can be loaded on? pity, is there loads of POIs already in NavMii then?

Its just NDrive is now defunct, I'm not sure how the maps are with it. Also it loads on my iPhone 4 with iOS4.3 on but no multitasking etc on it, I expect NavMii will as its recent?

just the standard ones shipped with the maps which are usually a bit poor (on all, not just navmii). copilot and tomtom allow you to unofficially add your own POIs without jailbreaking but it's a fiddly process and not something we would support directly.

I wouldn't say it was particularly fiddly it just there are a lot of steps to do it correctly.

However once you've done it once it's quite easy. I couldn't have lived without my POIs as I find them easier than having hundreds of favourites (you don't have to worry about mapsettings.cfg when you swap devices).

If you follow the instructions on the main camera page for iphone installation it has everything you need. However the main thing you have to make sure you can see is that you have root view to the apps. Without that you will not be able to use Diskaid to expand to the POI folder.

I just used it for my own regular POIs though, I'm running the Camera App by itself and it works a treat.

Had a reply from NavMii

"Navmii uses AND map data and updates are an on going process with them . Speed cameras are not updated monthly we are in talks with them to as and when updates are available . Unfortunately adding your own POI is not possible"

So who is AND map data never heard of them, have anyone?

Ok about POIs then if none officially do them then.

With the TomTom iPhone app its hardly loads of messing around and certainly doesn't require a Jail Broken iPhone to add custom POI files, Sygic Mobile Maps was the same even though it did require an additional translation stage of the data on the PC, Sygic Aura is an unknown at the moment, currently it doesn't support custom POI files.

The icon file name is changed from .bmp to .png and the renamed file along with its corresponding ov2 file is transfered to the correct iPhone folder using DiskAid running in advanced mode.

Periodic updates just require the ov2 file over-writing thats on the iPhone with the new data.

As the Meerkat would say "Simples" - Mike

I've just remembered (and found) when cleaning out cupboard that I have a Asus A696 GPS Windows Mobile. I'm not sure what's on it, I'm sure I bought a version of Tom Tom for it ages ago though. Not sure what version of windows mobile on.

So is there a newer version I can use of Tom Tom or any other good GPS software then?

It comes with a proper car holder and charger so I may just leave it in my car. Also I seem to remember that TT on there was much more flexible, allowing POI addition etc?

Any help? You think this might be a better way to go than iPhone? Since I already have it? Either ways are more hassle than integrated though Sad

**edit**
charged it up it's Windows Mobile 6, can't find the TomTom SD I had though, will my setup run the latest TomTom from their website, TT Navigator 7?

**edit 2**
The maps used on NavMii are from AND, a Dutch firm, got a reply back from NavMii, they say the UK is not as detailed as they like though, and updates slow.

Cheers

Well been using the old version of TomTom for now on my Asus A696, but still undecided what to do.

Sygic MM is on offer on App store now for £10, Co-Pilot is for £17. Or do I buy Sygic MM for Windows Mobile for £13 which allows custom POI and camera database etc.

I dont know wether now to use my iPhone 4, or buy the Win Mob version. With the iPhone I believe that you can do a Google search in app for POIs etc, so maybe this sort of replaces custom POIs? btw my iPhone is NOT jailbroken

Also with my iPhone having 3G all the time on, Sygic says they send you alert about traffic incidents etc? is this correct?

decisions.....

As I stated earlier it is not difficult to put Custom POIs on an iPhone, it's just long winded, but after you have done it once it is a breeze.

I use a standard 3GS that is un-modified.

At the end of the day the choice is yours, you could possibly get TT7 working on the Asus, but through "un-official" means.

TomTom on the iphone is a lot more expensive than the other offerings, but I just prefer it. HD Traffic is worth the extra money by itself.

I can't comment on the traffic data on the other products but I am quite anal about traffic delays (driving 35k a year) and HD Traffic is the best I have ever seen and I've used TomTom traffic since it first came out.

I recently dropped my Windows Mobile device which was using TomTom7 and the latest maps and a standard traffic subscription, but IQ Routes and HD Traffic on the iPhone certainly go some way to justifying giving TomTom even more of my hard earned cash.

But it depends what is important to you because £70 for singing and dancing TomTom against £10-15 for Sygic is quite a difference?
