I'm looking at getting a cheap Garmin as my Talex subs have finally run out.

I'm looking at the 2200 or 2240 as I don't want widescreen for what will essentially be a pseudo SCD.

I've downloaded the user manual that shows the unit being on an active mount and the power cable being plugged into the mount.

Other pictures I've seen have the power cable being plugged into the unit itself.

which is right ?

Which manual are you looking at? I just tried two and..

The Quick Start Manual for the nüvi® 2200/2240/2250 shows (on page 3) that those models have a passive mount.

But the full Owners Manual for the nüvi® 2200/2300 series covers both model ranges, and on page 3/4 it shows the mounts are different.

Thanks

The PDF that was confusing me is:

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_2200_2300_2400_EN_OM.pdf

Page 3, but page 6 does highlight the differences.............

I think the 2310 is probably a better bet and looks like an active mount

Well I've read the manual and I'm no clearer why they use two different types of USB port. The table on page six does little to help. In the past the poet on the unit was the same type as the port on the mount.

I commented on this in my recent 2630 review.

I suspect that all newer models will be using MicroUSB on the device itself but that the active cradles are an existing design hence miniUSB. In time it is reasonable to assume that they will be re-designed with microUSB as we move to this as the standard on many devices.

Smile I was just saying that I think it's an issue that will be resolved once stock of the older mount is used up. Otherwise it is just daft to have two separate connector specs.

I do not know if this will help, I have just got a 3790T and this uses the same micro USB for both the active mount and plugging straight into the unit, depending how you want to power it.

Continuing on............

Would one of these power a Garmin OK in the car to save having the rather large 'lump' hanging out of the ciggy socket?

I realise I would need a USB charge lead.

Yes but you'd lose TMC Traffic.

Thanks, no problem because my Honda built in job has TMC traffic, plus I run a Trafficmaster Q-Busta.

I'm getting there Smile

Remember that with the mini USB type units a normal usb lead will put the unit into mass storage mode and it won't then work as a navigation device. Garmin usb leads have the outer part of the plug attached to data ground or power ground (I'm not sure which). Without that (non standard) connection the power lead will fool the unit into thinking it is connected to a PC. I guess that the micro usb leads need this connection too.

Thanks for that Smile

So, if I understand right, ensure I have a proper Garmin USB lead ?

This arrived yesterday and works OK in the car (LED is lit to show power is OK).

That should work fine, as that's simply providing a USB socket, and some 3rd party leads work fine too, others don't. You can either experiment or buy the Garmin lead to be sure it'll work, but of course they are far more expensive Sad
