I've clipped the cradle to the on the left hand side of the steering wheel and used a cable tie to pull the curly lead into a 'backwards L shape' so it frames the centre console rather than drags across it. The antenna clips intp the side but has a fair bit of cable, so I've routed it under the steering wheel and up the door/dash joint to the dashboard on the offside. It all looks OK. I leave the cradle & cables set up, so I don't think I'll get any problems with loose connections.
As regards using it without power, I've never tried it, but I'm glad of the convenient recharge so I'd never consider it an option.

I used it in earnest the other day. Lincolnshire to Warrington. Fantastic.

Dixons are now doing the same kit for £399 on their website. But they're out of stock.

I believe the £399 is with the bluetooth gps. The £299 (£254 at airports) is the wired GPS.
I'd save the money & use the wired (if you can find it.)

The offer at £299 ended on June 1st.
The wired vesion IS now £399 and Bluetooth version seems to be £499 (with Ipaq 1940 instead of 2210).

Maybe the offer will be on again....
