This probably only applies to the UK.
I am alarmed that you can buy a 12.99 app for the iphone which will allow you to download 1gb of 1:50k Ordinance Survey mapping (very detailed) directly to the phone and PC/Mac, which effectively turns the iphone in to a GPS. These maps are also accessible localy on your computer, which would allow you manage routes without access to the internet (no need to rely on 3rd party sites, unlike Garmins solution)
With devices such as Memory Map and Satmap, you can get the mapping that also runs on your computer as well as the device.
I have just spoken to Garmin customer support here in the UK, and asked them what they expect me to do. I have Roadtrip (Mac version of Mapsource) , but with no OS/TRAIL maps available to buy for the UK, except on SD card that runs on the device. (plotting long routes on the device is painstaking)
I have just called their CS department and their representative pointed me towards bikehike.co.uk to plot my routes, totally ignoring the point that i need Internet access to do this, something you don't normally have whilst camping in fields and around fells!
He rudely told me that i should have researched it before buying, which i did, but since the world of GPS is such a minefield, it's hard to know what advice is the best.
So basically Garmin are admitting that in the 21st Century they still have to rely on FREE 3rd party websites to bolster their products. Pathetic!
WAKE UP GARMIN, YOU'RE WAY BEHIND THE TIMES.
Anyone reading this, and lives in the UK, and is looking for a GPS!
DONT BUY GARMIN!!!!
I hope this wake up saves someone else their time and money!

Had you downloaded your map rather than purchasing on a locked SD card, you would have had usable maps for planning purposes on your computer wouldn't you?
