Hi Folks

Can anyone advise me on a point? when the matrix on a variable speed cam on a motorway is blank the max speed is then 70mph, does that mean the camera will activate if vehicles travel over that limit or are they only active when the matrix is lit? many thanks

The cameras are always active. When the matrix is unlit they are set to 70 mph...

Is that a recent change Paul. I'm sure they USED to be off when the matrix signs were off.

Someone else asked me this last month. The information i read last month was that whilst it was never intended to enforce the NSL soon after it was installed it was switched to enforcing 70 mph when no matrix sign was displayed.

On another website someone confirms their dad (yes, yes i know Wink ) has confirmed the cameras are set to "capture" vehicles travelling over the speed limit when the matrix is off.

Pepipo website has forum members mentioning that they have been flashed at 80-90 mph when the matrix signs where off. Doesn't mention NIPs though.... Another "confirmed" his work college received a NIP for an offence exceeding 70 mph when the matrix signs where off.

However other information says that with the change from wet film to digital earlier this year the trigger speed for the cameras when there is no speed displayed on the matrix was dropped from 90 mph to the more usual ACPO 70 mph + 10% + 2 mph (79 mph).

Now, none of this is cast iron, inside information, however when the matrix signs are off i drive as it they are set to 70 mph....

Just don't ask what i do when the matrix signs are on though.... Wink

Back OT. Thinking back over the last few weeks (i had several trips through the entire section) I'm surprised by the number of vehicles that go a lot faster that 70 through the area when the matrix signs are off. Perhaps this lends more weight to the theory they don't work at all with the matrix off...

Not I (which is both grammatically and uppercaseically correct), I already got divorced back in 1998. Shocked Laughing

This is certainly true of the M25 Variable Speed Section Cameras.

They 'used' to be active only when a lower speed limit was in operation but since switching to digital they are now active all the time, either at the variable speed or 70 if no lower limit is in force.

That's great, thanks for the confirmation, as that's a section of road I travel on a lot, and part of me still tends to think they're off when the signs are off.
