The general rules for updating maps are...

Connect your nuvi to the PC

The upgrade map will contain ALL mapping for the major region (i.e. if you have UK&Ireland you will get ALL Europe).

The installation process from the upgrade will upgrade the installed region(s) on your nuvi and if you are connected to the internet, automatically retrieve and apply the unlock code.

If you have (for example) a nuvi 310 with UK&Ireland then you can use the MapInstall program to selectively install additional area of the mapping to an SD card which will work in your nuvi.

If you want to have end to end routing you will need all the mapping in one place. I.e. with the nuvi 310 example above, if you want to plan a route from UK to Italy - you will need all the maps for all the countries involved in the same location - that is UK&I and the others on the SD card. This is because you can only have one mapset in use at the same time. The simplest way to achieve this is to install everything onto an SD card and use that.
