I'm a bit disappointed with this announcement.
I bought a 730T and in my opinion TomTom still haven't fully launched all the services they promoted on this device (HD Traffic, one of the reasons I chose this device) and now there moving onto another model, less than a year since the X30 range was released?

I think it is quite disgraceful. We have had the x20, then x30 and now the new and again improved x40, all before bits of the older ones work as they should.
I recently went on holiday, I took my 920T, my Father in Law took his PDA and his PDA with version 6 produced quicker routes than my designated 920T did.
The new maps are not available, they should be.
Like I said some bits don't work properly, you are not given all the info. if sites like this didn't exist it would be nigh on impossible to get it all working.
For example, TT Home apparently doesn't back up as it should, you have to do your own.
For something that costs as much money as these things do surely it is a better idea to get the "current" model working and allow everyone to use it to its fullest before producing another newer product that is basically the same but with another bit tacked onto the side that will be available to the sad people who bought the previous one in a few months time when you have made them wait a bit.
What is the difference between x20 and x30, hardware wise? Is this again the same as the x20 but with minor software/firmware changes?
It is not good long term product introduction, or it is not something I am used to.

MikeAlder, are you quite certain the device hardware has changed? It appears to me that the active mount carries the sim/connectivity, and also serves to limit the availability of extended services to the x20 and x30's. I'm not so sure that the main unit itself isn't identical, hardware-wise, to the 920/930. Entirely different hardware, the mount serves only to supply power etc, the SIM is inside the main unit.
The x40 is not seen by TomTom as a replacement for the x20/x30 range. It is positioned as a supplementary model range targetted at the 'Road Warrior' user who requires the added features and connectivity.
With regards to the data subscription, TomTom were at pains t point out that no phone subscription is required and there are no hidden costs. It's important to re-clarify, this is NOT a replacement for existing units but a supplementary model aimed at the high-end user.
HD Traffic has yet to be launched here, it will be made available in the autumn as previously announced. As mentioned above there is a monthly charge of 9.95 (euros not pounds) for the service. This includes unlimited data for the service, but only in one country. If you move outside your coverage zone the device does not get the traffic/live services. _________________ Mike Barrett

The active mount does not contain a SIM slot. The SIM is built into the device and cannot be changed. The active mount does have a USB connector and that is all. It feels really sturdy a nice change from the current mounts.
Rest assured all the folks at TomTom have said that this is a new device inside and out. _________________ Mike Barrett

Take a closer look at the mounts electrical connections, there is no way you will get an x20 or x30 to sit on that and work - this is enough to show me that it is new hardware.
Perhaps Darren/ Mike could find out what the built in memory capacity is for the new devices and any memory slot expansion, also which maps are installed - Mike
