Bit-side is a privately owned Berlin-based professional services and software company with 39 employees. By acquiring bit-side Nokia will strengthen and accelerate its mobile development for Nokia Maps.

"Acquiring bit-side enables Nokia to offer consumers the world-leading mobile location applications, such as Maps, along with routing and navigation at an accelerated speed" said Michael Halbherr, vice president and head of social location, Nokia. We share Nokia's visions, on social and location related services and the future of their enabling technologies."

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2009. Bit-side will be integrated to Nokia's Services unit.

Press release: ON Semiconductor Introduces Industry’s First Integrated Bi-Directional OVP for Portable Electronics and OCP for External Accessories

Eliminating the Need for External Components, the NCP370 Protects Portable Devices against Surge Damage and Also Protects Portable Accessories by Controlling Reverse Current

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ONNN), a leading global supplier of high-performance, energy-efficient silicon solutions, has introduced the industry’s first integrated bi-directional device, with positive and negative (+/-) overvoltage protection (OVP) for cell phones, MP3/4, PDAs and GPS systems, and overcurrent protection (OCP) for portable accessories such as FM transceiver, load speakers and flash modules.

This fully integrated solution simplifies and streamlines design in portable electronics by eliminating the need for external components that have – until now – been necessary to protect vulnerable portable devices against electrical surge damage from wall adapters and accessories, unsuitable after-market AC-DC adapters, and problems caused by inverting polarity in some USB cables.

Features and Benefits

The new NCP370 significantly improves the front end protection of the portable devices by providing positive protection up to +28 volts (V) and negative protection down to -28 V. Utilizing an innovative architecture, this single device also provides OCP for the external accessories - which are connected on the bottom connector – and supplied via a lithium-ion battery.

Integrated low on resistance (Ron) N-channel MOSFETs effectively support the direct high charge current up to 1.3 amperes (A) requested by the portable electronics industry’s latest lithium battery charge levels. The NCP370 is one of ON Semiconductor’s new OVP generation products. It is available with several overvoltage thresholds to address the maximum rating of the downstream applications. Additionally, the device offers a second “reverse” mode, enabling the regulation of the reverse current coming from a portable device’s battery to supply the external accessories such as an FM transceiver, audio functions or flash capabilities universally connected on the bottom connector of the portable devices.

The device is designed to internally limit current up to 1.6 A - a value that can be externally decreased by a pull down resistor - thus eliminating the need for an external OCP device in the application, reducing production costs and lessening the required PCB area in the final portable application. The standby current of the device, which is lower than 1 micro-ampere (µA), avoids any battery discharge when the wall adapter is unplugged or when the phone is off, and so increases battery life and limits recharge iterations.

The NCP370 is a key addition to the portfolio of ON Semiconductor products targeted at the four primary subsystems typically found in portable applications. This device specifically addresses the challenging requirements within the interconnect subsystem. ON Semiconductor also offers solutions for the display and lighting, power management, and audio/video subsystems for handheld portable devices.

Packaging and Pricing

The NCP370MUAITXG is now available in a 3 mm x 3 mm x 0.55 mm LLGA-12, lead-free (Pb-free), RoHS compliant package, and is budgetary priced at $0.80 per unit in 3,000 unit quantities.

PostPosted: Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:10 pm    Post subject: Sleek and Simple to Use, Garmin® FR60 Fitness Watch Gets You Reply with quote

Press release: Sleek and Simple to Use, Garmin® FR60 Fitness Watch Gets You Connected On the Road, In the Gym

OLATHE, Kan./January 30, 2009/Business Wire — Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced its newest fitness watch that sets the standard for wireless connectivity, the FR60. The latest breakthrough in Garmin’s expansive outdoor recreation and fitness line, the stylish and intuitive FR60 was announced in conjunction with the 2009 ISPO Winter trade show in Munich.

“Indoors or out, it’s easier than ever to set fitness goals and track your progress with the fashionable yet affordable FR60,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “While you exercise, the easy-to-use FR60 accurately tracks your time, calories burned, heart rate and other data from linked fitness equipment. Once you’re done and within range of your computer, that information is wirelessly transferred and stored for later analysis.”

The central element of the user-friendly FR60 system is an advanced fitness watch which interfaces wirelessly with other ANT+™ compatible fitness devices such as a heart rate monitor, a foot pod that monitors speed and distance or third-party fitness equipment at the gym or at home. Available in men’s and women’s versions, the FR60 comes with a wireless USB ANT™ Stick that plugs into the user’s PC or Mac and automatically downloads workout data stored on the watch to a personal computer. No cables are necessary as the FR60 quickly synchronizes with the computer once it is in close proximity. The workouts themselves are made easier with the FR60 as its robust heart rate monitor and slimmed-down foot pod transmit data wirelessly and activate automatically upon movement, removing the need to turn the lightweight accessories on and off. Available in three colors – red, lilac and black – the streamlined FR60 comes packaged with a heart rate monitor, and the foot pod is available in select FR60 bundles.

With this affordable yet sophisticated fitness watch, Garmin broadens its appeal to the millions of consumers who want to burn calories and track workouts in a cost-effective manner. While the FR60 processes much of the same data as its GPS-enabled predecessors, those functions are packaged in a very compact device the size of a typical fitness watch. The FR60 can track and record up to 15 hours and 100 laps of detailed exercise data. And because the FR60 records its data from the heart rate monitor, foot pod and ANT+ compatible fitness equipment, users can exercise indoors.

Triathletes will embrace the versatility of the swim-friendly FR60 as it helps them train and race indoors or outdoors, on the bike, in the water or on the trails. The featherweight foot pod enables the FR60 to track and record speed, distance, calories burned, steps and cadence without excess burden. Cycling enthusiasts will enjoy the versatile options of adding a bike speed and cadence sensor and a handy bike mount. Adding to the wide range of uses and wireless connectivity, FR60 users in the United States will be able to link effortlessly to their ANT+ compatible fitness equipment such as treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical trainers and more. More information about these ANT+ compatible products will be announced in March at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) international convention and trade show in San Francisco.

When used with Garmin Connect™ — Garmin’s online training site — the FR60’s benefits continue long after the workout. By pairing the FR60 with Garmin Connect, users can automatically log their workouts, track their totals, share workouts with coaches, friends and family and participate in an online fitness community with similar interests. The wireless features of the FR60 are enabled by ANT+ personal area network technology. ANT+ is a leading wireless interface protocol enabling ultra low power applications like fitness monitors. ANT+ offers all the benefits of digital wireless communications with much lower power consumption than other wireless protocols. The men’s version of the FR60 weighs just 44 grams, the women’s model weighs 41 grams, and each has a user-replaceable battery with a one-year life. The FR60 is the latest breakthrough from Garmin, which has spent 20 years using technology and innovation to enhance users’ lives, making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries. Press release: New arrivals in the world's most successful mobile phone range

Espoo, Finland - Nokia have announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today's hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which continues the legacy of one of the company's most successful products, the Nokia 6300. "The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality," said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," continued Petersen.

The Nokia 6700 combines smooth surfaces, rich materials and precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat which completes the premium finish. Improving on all areas of its forerunner, the Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access meaning sharing images or video is faster and easier than ever. At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carry thousands of their favorite tracks.

Rounding off the new arrivals is the Nokia 2700 classic which, at and estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of Nokia's most affordable, full featured handsets. Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. "These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia's online service, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites. The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner's first Internet experience," concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.

Press release: New Version of NewBay’s Photo & Video Album Drives ARPU For Operators

NewBay LifeCache Photo & Video Album (PVA) v4 provides new video editing, geotagging and 3rd party developer features

ShowStoppers @ Mobile World Congress 2009
DUBLIN, Ireland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NewBay, the leader in digital lifestyle solutions for operators, has announced version 4 of LifeCache Photo & Video Album (PVA) which now includes advanced video editing; geotagging and 3rd party developer features. These new features will drive revenue and subscriber usage and will enable exciting new “mash-up” services and multi-screen interfaces to be easily developed. LifeCache PVA is the leading white-label multimedia album solution for operators that allows subscribers to easily create and maintain personal online albums for photos and videos, direct from their handset or Web browser.

The popularity of video is increasing rapidly, as people record more video content on handsets, digital cameras or camcorders, and want to share it with friends and family through albums and social networks. Given this growing trend, PVA version 4 video editing now enables subscribers to mix-up their own video content with trimming, splicing and transition features. The video is stored by the operator, and viewed and shared via mobile handsets, Web and TV. Other new features include: music overlays, special effects and photo movies; which all use an easy “drag-and-drop” interface.

Version 4 geotagging features enable users to organize, manage and search their photos and videos based on location. This feature set allows users to browse shared photos using map interfaces or view their own travels using a “media trail” map view. Geotags can be automatically added to photos and videos taken with GPS camera phones or added manually in the album by PVA users. NewBay’s LifeCache handset client software can also embed geotags into media prior to uploading.

“Users digital content requirements are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and there is an emerging need to not only manage and share content, but also to access it across multiple screens,” said Harry Wang, Director of Mobile Product Research at Dallas-based Parks Associates. “This presents operators with the opportunity to develop new revenue sources to supplement traditional voice revenues. NewBay’s LifeCache PVA provides operators with the tools to monetize converged user-content management services.”

To meet the increasing demand for converged user content services, PVA version 4 now includes a full 3rd party developer platform. This platform allows operators to pull user content into other services, develop “mash-ups” and enables developers to build fully customized user interfaces using almost any technology on any platform. This approach not only enables operators to derive revenue from other sources, but also drives convergence, by allowing content to be shared, viewed and managed across multiple devices (i.e. handsets, Web, TV, set-top boxes, games consoles, media servers and home networks). LifeCache PVA developer support includes a full featured API, sample code and a sandbox developer environment.

“NewBay is without doubt the world’s most successful provider of photo and video album solutions to operators, working with leading operators such as T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Telefonica/O2,” said Dr Nagappan Arunachalam, Chief Marketing Officer, NewBay Software. “When it comes to technological advancement and driving consumer usage trends, NewBay is leading the way. This is clearly demonstrated in the latest version of PVA which delivers an awesome user experience. Unlike direct-to-consumer offerings such as Flickr and Picasa, LifeCache PVA offers telco-grade scalability and allows operators to realize returns from the user content within their networks.”

LifeCache PVA measurably boosts operator ARPU through increasing message and data traffic, and by driving SMS and email alerts on album activity. Operators also benefit from becoming a safe haven for precious photos and videos, which in turn reduces churn and furthers brand engagement.

PVA main features include:

Upload photos and videos, from mobile and Web, and securely store in an online location
Publish media to personalized albums and control who sees it with advanced sharing functionality
Easily organize and locate media with useful tools such as “drag & drop”, tagging and search capabilities
Stay up-to-date with guest activity (e.g. comments) on albums, via SMS and email alerts.
LifeCache PVA v4 will be available from March 2009.

To experience a demo of LifeCache PVA, visit NewBay at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain (16 – 19 February 2009), Hall 1, Stand 1F17.

Introducing Google Earth 5.0

Press release: Users Can Dive into the Ocean, Travel Back in Time and Visit Mars in the Newest Version of Google Earth

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) today announced the launch of ocean in Google Earth, a new feature that enables users of Google Earth to dive beneath the water surface, explore 3D underwater terrain and browse ocean-related content contributed by leaders in ocean science and advocacy. The new version of Google Earth also introduces Historical Imagery, a feature that enables users to virtually travel back in time through archival satellite and aerial imagery, Touring, which makes it simple to create a narrated tour in Google Earth and share it with the world and Google Mars 3D, which features hi-res imagery and terrain of the red planet.

"With this latest version of Google Earth you can not only zoom into whatever part of our planet’s surface you wish to examine in closer detail, you can now dive into the world’s oceans that cover almost three-quarters of the planet and discover new wonders that had not been accessible in previous versions of this magical experience," said The Honorable Al Gore at this morning's launch event in San Francisco. "Moreover, with the new historical imagery feature, you can look back in time and see for yourself the unprecedented pace of change taking place on the Earth — largely because of human influences. For example, you can watch the melting of the largest glacier in Glacier National Park—the Grinnell Glacier—image by image, for the last decade."

"In discussions about climate change, the world's oceans are often overlooked despite being an integral part of the issue," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. About one-third of the carbon dioxide that we emit into the atmosphere ends up in the oceans. Furthermore, biodiversity loss in our oceans in the next 20-30 years will be roughly equivalent to losing an entire Amazon rainforest, but this goes unnoticed because we can't see it. This is why today's launch of Google Earth 5.0 is so important - it gives us an opportunity to change everyone's perspective."

Ocean in Google Earth combines sea floor terrain and expert content to provide users with an opportunity to explore some of the most difficult-to-reach parts of the world. Virtual travelers to Hawaii, for example, can examine underwater volcanoes, see videos about the exotic marine life of the region, read about nearby shipwrecks and contribute photos and videos of favorite surf spots.

The ocean feature is on by default in the newest version of Google Earth. As users zoom in on the ocean they will see a dynamic water surface, and once they dive beneath the surface they can navigate 3D sea floor terrain. The feature includes 20 content layers, containing information contributed by the world's leading scientists, researchers, and ocean explorers (for a full list of partners please visit http://earth.google.com/ocean/partners). These include:

An "Explore the Ocean" layer containing photos and videos about ocean hot spots around the world contributed by over 80 individuals and organizations
A National Geographic Magazine geo-quiz and overlays from their new Atlas of the Ocean
Videos from the archives of Jacques Cousteau, featuring never-before-seen footage of historic ocean expeditions
"What this project helped me begin to understand," said John Hanke, Director of Google Earth and Maps, "is the role the ocean plays in global climate change and the impact that humans are having on the oceans and the creatures that live in it. It was a serious omission on our part not to include a better treatment of the oceans when we launched Google Earth, and I'm very happy that we've been able to address that. We now have a good substrate for publishing and exploring data about the 'other' two-thirds of the planet."

The new feature was developed in close collaboration with oceanographer and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle and an advisory council of leading ocean advocates and scientists.

"I cannot imagine a more effective way to inspire awareness and caring for the blue heart of the planet than the new ocean in Google Earth, " said Sylvia Earle. "For the first time, everyone from curious kids to serious researchers can see the world, the whole world, with new eyes. In a stroke, Google Earth brings life and character to the blue part of the planet, and makes obvious the many ways land, water, atmosphere and living systems connect. Many 'aha!' moments are sure to come as people discover new patterns, new correlations, and countless personal discoveries while vicariously diving into the waters of the world."

The announcement was made this morning at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, one of the nation’s leading institutions for scientific education and research. Following the announcement, local fourth graders participated in an interactive lesson on marine ecosystems, designed specifically by Academy educators to use the new ocean feature. “Information technology is key to the work that Academy scientists and educators do, and Google Earth is a leading example of such technology,” said Dr. Greg Farrington, Executive Director of the Academy. “Ocean in Google Earth opens up a new world of opportunities to explore and educate the public about the least understood parts of our planet.”

Also launched today:

Historical imagery: In previous versions of Google Earth, users could only view only one set of imagery for a given location. Now users can activate a time slider to see both newer and older satellite imagery from around the globe, enabling them to observe a single location's development over time.

Touring is a simple new way for users to create narrated tours of imagery and content in Google Earth. By simply pressing the "record" button, users can fly from place to place, zoom in or out and click on content balloons, providing voiceover narration along the way. Whether creating a tour of one's family home or an in-depth study of environmental change, the tours are easy to create and even easier to share.

Google Mars 3D is the latest stop on Google's virtual tour of the galaxy. Users can travel to Mars with the click of a button and see high resolution imagery and 3D terrain. They can fly to the top of Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in our solar system, read geo-located excerpts about different locations on the planet from A Traveler's Guide to Mars, observe where various Mars Rovers and Landers have touched down and much more.

GPS Tracking - Previously only available in the Plus and Pro versions of Google Earth, now all users can upload tracks from GPS devices (including many Garmin, Magellan, and NMEA-compatible devices) to Google Earth, making it easy to visualize and record running, hiking and biking routes.

Google Earth 5.0 is now available in 41 languages (previously 26): English (US), English (GB), French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Dutch, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Polish, Turkish, Thai, Arabic, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Hungarian, Hebrew, Indonesian, Czech, Greek, Norwegian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Croatian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Filipino, Slovenian, Serbian, Catalan, Latvian, Ukrainian, and Hindi.
