Which would be better?

I was just wondering would people pay more for a device if it had free updates? and if so how much?
Also what price do people expect to pay for the map updates?

Any updates for older devices would be welcome, Navman don't have the best track record for supporting older units with new features/ maps.

As for cost, make the updates available on a regular basis (4 or 6 monthly) and charge around £25 to £35 per update for UK only, twice this for pan European mapping, anymore than this and users won't bother with the updates, the key is making sure there is an established and trustworthy system for updates in place BEFORE any additional price hike is attempted to the unit cost when purchased - you could be asking a user to pay for something upfront that would never become available - Mike
