Apparently, a team at Portsmouth University has devised a GPS system which communicates with other GPS units and analyses traffic conditions.

There was only a brief report on my local radio station and it sounds a bit like real-time TMC with direct communication between GPS units rather than needing to be processed and transmitted via the FM-RDS or GPRS systems

According to the report, this technology will be on the shelves within 2 years.

Has anybody else heard anything about this technology?

I'm sure i read something similar a while back regarding monitoring the movement of mobile phones (Vodafone springs to mind) whilst travelling to determine potential traffic hold ups....

Yes, I remember that too, but this definitely mentioned GPS units communicating directly with each other.

On the shelf within 2 years....mmmmm it should be ready for beta testing soon - I think Darren should get in there and acquire some evaluation units Wink

Not that new, DASH in the US have units that communicate with each other via WiFi and GSM to share traffic and road speed info already.
