Hi. I am experiencing difficulties when trying to install The POI capture program in my Tomtom Go300. I have a couple of question. 1. What version of Tomtom software should I be using and 2. What POI capture files go where? The speed camera database works fine. Question

I would try POICapture1.06G if you are using TT V6.

The 2 Folders, SdkRegistry and POICapture, should go as they are into the Root of the SD Card.

In this way you will get the POICapture Icon on the last Page of the Main Menu. If you want to have it on Page 1, you need to use the tomtom.mnu file and this goes into the SdkRegistry Folder.

This is purely a Text File and you can modify it in Notepad to show only those Icons you want, and in which order.

Try it and see how you get on.

I am another one who is very unknowing about the inner workings of the computer and its files/folders etc! I have the speed database correctly installed and know how to update this, but I'm lost with installing the POI Capture. I have it sitting on my desktop as a zipped file, but where do I find this 'root directory' - can't see it anywhere when I open up the removable disk. I can see the maps, voices and lots of other stuff, but nothing to do with roots, SdkRegistry and the like! Please help! Thank you.

The first, and most important, question is, which Software Version are you using?

If you have have V7, POICapture will not work for you, at this time.

The Root of a Drive is not the name of a Folder/File, it is the highest level of the Drive. In the explorer window it is the Drive letter level.

Using the TomTom as an example, the Map and Voices Folders are in the Root of the Device. Whether it be SD Card, Internal Memory or Hard Drive.

If you can confirm your Software Version we can move on from there. Smile

OK. Make sure you have POIC V1.06G.

When you have unzipped the Files into a folder, on the PC, you should have 2 Folders and 1 File in it.

The File is called TomTom.mnu and is the Custom Menu File. You need to decide whether you want the POICapture to tag on to the end of your Main Menu, or whether to use the Custom Menu to make POIC appear on the first Page.

There are lots of threads in the TomTom Forum about Custom Menus. Do a Search for "MenuItem", without the speech marks.

If you want to use the Custom Menu, Move the File to the SdkRegistry Folder.

Now Copy and Paste the 2 Folders to the Drive Letter that is your TT Device. This is the Root of the Unit's memory.

That's it. All done. Disconnect Safely and re-start the 500. If you change your mind about the Custom Menu, just delete it from the SD Card, or if the other way, Copy it from the PC to the SdkRegistry Folder on the 500.

Happy capturing. Smile

To find your software version tap the signal strength bars. You can then see the version number in a small box on the next page.
(If you tapp THAT box, you'll get another page with more handy info on your map version etc.)

Come back with your software version and someone can advise on what to do next.
Don't worry if you can't use POI Capture, there are several other ways to log cameras on your travels.

That's exactly what we need...
Unfortunately, due to TomTom changing the way their software works, and withdrawing their "software developer's kit", POI Capture simply doesn't work with v7 software.
(I'm suprised I couldn't see anything to that effect on the POI capture Download page Needs updating by the PGPSW team!)

So, give up on it for now. It might return one day.

Meanwhile have a look at this ancient post of mine to see a couple of ways of logging the cameras manually.
